MT. PLEASANT -- Close games are nothing new for the Wando Warriors. It's making that one game-changing play in those close games that has been a problem throughout the year.

That theme continued on Friday night, as the Warriors came up short once again, falling to Beaufort High, 12-6, on homecoming night.

"Competing isn't the problem. We still can't get over that hump and play a complete game," Wando head coach Jimmy Noonan said.

Wando is 1-3 in games decided by seven points or less.

The Eagles (6-1) started their first possession of the second half on the Wando 34-yard line, set up by a mediocre punt and a nice return by Dymonthe Gwathney. Five plays later, Demeo Holmes broke a 20-yard run on a third-and-9 play, setting up first and goal from the 1. He scored the next play to put Beaufort ahead 6-0.

"Our special teams in the third quarter was terrible," Noonan said.

Early in the final quarter, the Eagles faced fourth and 10 from the Wando 23, and converted when Beau Brown hit Gwathney on a 13-yard slant. The two hooked up again three plays later for a 15-yard pickup on third down.

Holmes finished off the drive with a 2-yard touchdown run to make it 12-0.

Holmes finished with 12 carries for 53 yards.

Justin Parker led the Eagles' defense with 12 tackles and a pair of sacks.

Beaufort, on a three-game winning streak, will host undefeated Berkeley on FrIday
